02/06... Gains and Loses: Our community - and specifically the New Dorp Branch Library - has lost a ood person. Ms.Nataliya Ushakova – the branch librarian – has left the library and moved on to another field. Luckily she will still be sharing her expertise in our community - this time at S.I.Technical High School where she will be teaching Russian. Nataliya - thanks for the good things you did for us and good luck in your new assignment.

She provided us with an update on the BP’s proposed changes to the New Dorp Lane/Hylan Blvd intersection and the new opening to Miller Field from Fr.Capodanno Blvd. and shared with us sketches of how these plans would look when they are implemented.

02/02... Need some good reading material during this long cold winter? Well, you are in luck. The New Dorp Branch Library will be having a “Book Sale in March - on Thursday, March 11 from 11am-6pm, Friday, March 12 from 1pm-6pm and Saturday, March 13 from 10am-5pm. You will find great books for adults, teens, and children including books in other languages! Mark your calendar and plan on picking up a few items.

12/11... I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season. Unfortunately the early snowstorm at the start of this month stopped our 10th Annual Celebration of Lights Procession. So, I guess we will need to have our 10th Annual event next December!  Also…

12/11… The 122 Precinct Community Council will be having their Annual Holiday Treat at the precinct house on Friday, December 19, 2003 from 6am to 8pm. Drop in at any time and meet the men and women who protect our neighborhood.

12/11…There will be a Community Outreach Workshop at CSI on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 from 6pm to 8:30pm concerning the Truck Route Management & Reduction Study. This meeting will update you on the progress of the Truck Route study, present the findings of the Business and Trucking Industry Surveys, and discuss enforcement issues. 12/02... Also, make sure you are planning on joining us on Saturday, December 6, 2003 for our 10th Annual Celebration of Lights Procession. We will gather at Mrs. Rosemary’s Dance Studio on New Dorp Plaza, warm up with a little song, then ring bells, sing carols and stroll up and down New Dorp Lane. 12/02... Mayor Bloomberg’s Staten Island Growth Management Task Force issued its final report at a special news conference at SI’s Borough Hall. 10/27... There will be sessions in the next few days to assist us in evaluating candidates and issues in next Tuesday’s elections. First, on Tuesday 10/28/2003 there will be a Political Forum at the Williamson Theatre at the College of Staten Island at 7pm. All candidates running for the District Attorney and City Council seats have been invited to make a presentation to the voters of Staten Island. Then, on Thursday 10/30/2003 there will be a forum to review the “Non-Partisan Elections” proposal at the Williamson Theatre at the College of Staten Island at 7pm. Leaders of the State Conservative & Independence Parties will present opposite sides, information and reasons on this issue. Plan now on attending these important informational sessions.

10/27… The New Dorp Branch Library will be closed for a period of three weeks to allow for the repair of the floor of the Community Room which was ruined during a recent flooding event. The closing is scheduled to begin on or around November 10. Call 718-351-2977 for additional information.

10/14... Just a reminder. Tomorrow – October 15 - there will be two sessions at which everyone will be able to testify before the Growth Management Task Force. The sessions will be in the Williamson Theatre at the College of Staten Island from 4-6pm and from 7-9pm.

10/03... Just a reminder. This Sunday we are privileged to have the 13th annual Columbus Day Parade sponsored by Borough President James P. Molinaro. Starting at 1 pm at New Dorp High School, the parade marches up New Dorp Lane to the railroad. Plan now on lining the street and applauding the marchers. And welcome the Grand Marshall – Fred Cerullo. This is an honor for our community. Make sure you are there to support it!

9/24... Due to a scheduling necessity our October meeting will be Oct 8 – the second Wednesday of the month. We expect this to be a one time change. 9/19... We have learned that Michael R. Bloomberg – Mayor of the City of New York will be the guest speaker at our October meeting. Plan now on attending this important meeting. Due to the occupancy limitations of our meeting hall, paid members of the organization and New Dorp residents will be given priority seating and attendance may have to be limited.

9/19... Community Board #2 met Wednesday night and voted to approve the proposed zoning changes as submitted by the Borough President and presented to our organization earlier this year. The zoning changes have now been approved by CB1 and CB2.

9/15... Community Board #2 will meet tomorrow night and vote on the proposed zoning changes as submitted by the Borough President and presented to our organization earlier in the year. For those of you who wish to speak on this issue there is a public session at 730pm, immediately preceding the start of the Board meeting. (Once the Board meeting begins there will be no public comment.) So if you wish to speak, you must show up and sign in on the speakers’ sheet prior to 730. You will be given a minimum of 2 minutes to present your views.

9/15... The 122 Precinct Community Council meets Wednesday night at 8pm at the 122Pct. At this meeting you can bring to the attention of the NYPD any matter which is relevant to the NYPD.

9/15... The Grant City Civic Association meets Thursday at 8pm at the Corner House Restaurant.

9/15... Lastly, a special thanks to Antoinette Sena of Villa Portofino Restaurant on Richmond Road who donated four pizza pies at our last general meeting. (By the way, it was delicious and every piece was eaten!)

9/07... Thank you to all the members who attended our meeting Wednesday night as we heard your thoughts and recommendations related to overdevelopment and teardowns in our community. Check the Friday SIAdvance (9/5/2003) for an extensive review of the goings-on at the Thursday session of the Growth Management Task Force.

9/07... The Land Use Committee of Community Board #2 will hold a hearing Tuesday, September 9 at 7:30 pm concerning three downzoning applications. One of the applications is directly related to our community. The rezoning in the first application is proposed to go from R-3-1 to R-3-x in New Dorp, Oakwood and Grant City. This is an opportunity for you to comment on this proposed change. The board meets in the Community Services Building on the grounds of Sea View Hospital.

a.       Emergency Staten Island Food Drive – Sep 2003. Asking people to donate non-perishable foods.

b.      Small Business Forum – Mon.Sep15, 2003 at the College of Staten Island from 830 to noon. Learn about starting and/or expanding a small business, training and government contracting opportunities. Free.

c.       Library Card Sign-Up on Sat Sep13 and Sep27 at the New Dorp Branch library.

d.      Littoral Society Beach Cleanup – Sat Sep20, 2003. On International Beach Cleanup Day join in cleaning up beaches on SI. Several teams will be working at different locations simultaneously.

e.      American Red Cross Emergency Preparedness Town Hall – Thu Oct 2, 2003. Karen Tennenbaum, Regional Director of the American Red Cross will discuss proper emergency procedures during a fire, power loss, and other situations.

f.         Free Mammography Screening Day Mon Oct 6, 2003. Appointments are required.

9/03... There will be a public hearing conducted by the Board of Directors of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation to allow the community to discuss health care issues provided by NYC facilities. Members of the Board will be at Sea View’s Colony Hall from 6pm to 8pm on Tue Sep 16, 2003. If you want to register to speak or need additional information please call the Community Advisory Board at 718-317-3213.

8/27... Plan on attending our next meeting on September 3 and bring us your thoughts and recommendations related to overdevelopment and teardowns in our community. This is an opportunity to ensure that you are heard. Our Special Committee on Land Use will be documenting your input.

8/05... The Staten Island Growth Management Task Force met today for the first time. The members met in the Borough President's conference room at Borough Hall and identified the issues that they believe must be dealt with if we are to change our current direction. The issues raised will be prioritized and grouped as short-term, middle-term and long-term items. There is a plan to hold public sessions in the future.

8/05... Note: our September meeting will be dedicated to collecting input from the community on their thoughts, concerns, and suggestions related to the Staten Island Growth Management Task Force today. 

7/22... Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg named the Staten Island Growth Management Task Force today. This initiative aims to protect Staten Islanders' quality of life and address overdevelopment. The task force's goal is to outline specific actions to better regulate development, and to preserve and reinforce the quality of life and traditional neighborhood character of Staten Island. Among the seventeen members of the task force are community leaders Michael Morrell, President of the Westerleigh Improvement Society and Joseph E. Markowski, President of this Association. 

6/23... Make sure you read yesterday's SI Advance front page article entitled: "Mayor authorizes team to address overbuilding". Also check out the editorial on page B2. These items relate well to the discussions we have been having about the status of the downzoning applications, its implications for our community and the issue of "teardowns". We have put together a "Special Committee on Land Use" which will be looking into these issues in more depth and reporting back to the membership.

6/02... Plan on attending on next meeting Wednesday June 4. We will be reviewing the status of the downzoning applications and have an update on "teardowns".

5/07... At tonight's meeting we heard from David Goldfarb who updated us on the work of the Preservation League. Using a powerpoint presentation he explained the rational behind applying for "historic district" status for areas. Individual unique and special houses can also be protected. And there is still time to sign up for our next dining program on May22 at Mike's Place.

(b) the South Beach Civic Association is meeting Wed Apr23 at 730pm at the Dominic Epifanio Parish Center of Holy Rosary Church. Speakers are John Petrozza on "red light cameras" and Joe Valentin on the 122 Pct Community Council.

(c) the Midland Beach Civic Association announces a meeting on the proposed Midland Beach Fast Ferry at the South Beach Psychiatric Auditorium on Thu Apr24 at 730pm.

(d) a forum on "Rediscovering Youth Sportsmanship" for parents, coaches and officials will be held Mon Apr28 at 7pm at NDHS, sponsored by the St.Barnabas Health Care System of NJ and Councilman Jim Oddo.

4/03... At last night's meeting we heard from Rob Shlyakh representing Assemblyman Matthew Mirones. He updated us on a number of initiatives the Assemblyman is promoting. NYPD's Maria Gilsenan reminded us that we should check for identification before admitting utilities personnel into our houses. And NYPL's Nataliya Ushakova stopped by and thanked the NDCCA for its support during their recent book sale. 

3/29... Borough President James Molinaro is planning on giving a presentation concerning the demapping issue and transportation on SI at the Petrides School on Wednesday, April 9. Plan now on attending this important update. It begins at 7pm.

3/29... Our next meeting is on April 2. Be informed about what is happening in your community. Also George Way's exhibition continues at Snug Harbor. Make sure you set aside time to visit that exhibit.

3/19... At the 122 Pct Council meeting tonight we heard about the strategies that the NYPD is following as it works to control the number of accidents on Hylan Blvd. We were also given guidance on how to deal with graffiti as the warmer weather finally reaches us. 3/13...Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the NYPD officers - Detective Rodney Andrews and Detective James Nemorin -  who were killed this past Monday night.  

3/06...At our meeting last night we heard from Dean Curry from the National Lighthouse Museum under development in St. George. He shared with us the plans for that lcoation. Nataliya Ushakova from the New Dorp Branch Library talked to us about their planned book sale from March 13-15.

2/05...At our meeting tonight we heard from Carolyn Pinto from the Federated Garden Clubs of NYState, Inc. who told us about the many activities of the garden clubs - including work in New Dorp by the monuments at the top of New Dorp Lane. Nataliya Ushakova from the New Dorp Branch Library talked to us about their planned book sale from March 13-15. They need materials (books, CDs, videos) and volunteers to help preparing for the sale (starting March 3) and working the days of the sale. Call 351-2977 to volunteer! Sgt. Vincent Fragapane of the NYPD 122Pct Community Affairs Unit updated us on various items effecting our neighborhood. He also asked everyone to talk with their family members and friends encouraging them to drive more slowly and carefully. Too many of our young people are getting hurt and killed in traffic accidents. Lastly we discussed on upcoming dining event "Dining Through New Dorp - 34" at Alexander's on February 26. Check the dining tab for additional information.

1/26...Our next meeting is fast approaching. Look for our newsletter in your mailbox soon. Also set aside February 26 for our next dining experience at Alexander's. You will surely want to join us for good food, good company and good conversation. 

1/13...Ah NY football fans. It was fun while it lasted. All things considered, it was a good year and there is hope that it will be even better next year. Meanwhile, check out the food review of Restaurant on the Plaza in yesterday's SI Advance. It is one of the many fine eating establishments in our neighborhood. 

1/08...Deputy Inspector Patrick Conry - the Commanding Officer of the 122 Precinct - was our guest speaker tonight. He updated us on the continuing reduction in crime within our precinct and answered questions about the Mayor's "Silent Night" Initiative, activities around the Tysens Apartments and Dugan Park, and traffic concerns at New Dorp Lane/Hylan Blvd as well as the Lane/Richmond Road. Also, we had elections for the officers of our Association. The current slate of officers was re-elected. Congratulations to all.

12/11... An early reminder. Our first meeting of 2003 will be on the SECOND Wednesday of the month - January 8 - due to the New Year's Holiday.

12/11... Congratulations to George Vorwick on winning our holiday banner. This event proved to be a successful fundraiser for our organization - minimal work and yet we still made some money. Look for our next fundraiser in the Spring!

11/28... Once again the students of New Dorp High School will be painting holiday scenes on various store windows throughout our community. Make sure you acknowledge the good work of the students and the support of the stores when you see the paintings. 

11/22... Once again thank you to the many merchants who contributed to the installation of the holiday lights along New Dorp Lane. We understand a special thank you is due the owners of Hollywood Florist who spearheaded the effort. Nice job guys! 

11/20... We visited the Board of Standards & Appeals yesterday to oppose a variance request to build retail stores on the property at 2493 Richmond Road. With the support of Community Board #2, Councilman James Oddo, and Borough President James Molinaro as well as the presence and testimony of a number of people from the community, the Commissioners challenged the variance request and suggested that consideration be given for using that property as it is zoned - R2. The next hearing will be in January 2003. So... it is to be continued.

11/13... As we prepare to visit the Board of Standards & Appeals on Nov19 to oppose a variance request to build retail stores on the property at 2493 Richmond Road, we enjoy the support of Community Board #2, Councilman James Oddo, and Borough President James Molinaro. All of these elected officials have or will be sending communications to BSA opposing the variance request. Call us at 979-6011 if you can join us when we visit the Board of Standards & Appeals on Nov19 for the 2pm hearing. 

11/13... A special thank you to our hosts at Bistro where we celebrated "Dining Through New Dorp - 33" last night. A wonderful crowd of 27 members, family and friends enjoyed a fine meal and fine conversation. A special "thank you" goes out to Linda Marotto who has coordinated our dining events throughout the past year.

11/07... Our anticipated guest speaker Eve Leber Zimetbaum was unable to make our meeting. However we had Carl Sabatino representing the American Parkinson Disease Association speak to us about a presentation which will be given November 19 from 1000-1145 at the Hilton Garden Inn. The presentation will talk about planned giving, charitable annuities, bequests and wills. Admission is free as is a complimentary breakfast. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling Carl Sabatino at 718-981-8001 or 800-223-2732 to make that reservation. 

10/29... We are very fortunate to have Eve Leber Zimetbaum as our guest speaker at our November meeting. Ms.Zimetbaum is an artist and teacher who works at Snug Harbor as well as working with many seniors groups to help them appreciate the satisfaction they can derive from art. Join us at our next meeting - November 6 - and hear Ms.Zimetbaum share her insights... and then perhaps you will get an opportunity to dabble in a little artistic work yourself!

10/10... I attended Councilman James Oddo's Civic Roundtable meeting this evening. The major local issues that he discussed were: the Graffiti initiative; the Loop/ Forest Hill Road/ Rockland Avenue; downzoning applications; medical buildings in the community; Mid-Island bluebelt; the Fast Ferry; and the restoration of the SI Railway fare. Make sure you come to our next meeting on November 6 for an update! 

10/06... I hope you were able to participate in and/or watch the Columbus Day Parade along New Dorp Lane this afternoon. The weather was spectacular... the crowds were spectacular... and the spirit of the marchers was intoxicating. The many high school bands sounded especially wonderful this year. And I hope you topped off the day by visiting one of the many fine restaurants in our neighborhood. A special thanks goes to Borough President James Molinaro who made sure this special event happened despite the severe budget constraints the Borough is operating under. 

10/03... Our next dining program will be on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 when we journey to Bistro on Hylan Blvd. Check our Dining option in the right hand column for information about the menu offerings... and plan now on joining us for a good meal and good company!

10/02... Our guest speaker tonight was SI Advance columnist and antiques expert George Way. He talked to us about antiques and how he got interested and started as a teen. Then he showed us a slide presentation of some of his treasures. Those items and many others will be on display at Snug Harbor in February 2003 when he has a three month show. Lastly, he performed some appraisals of items that various members had brought with them to the meeting. All in all it was an exciting and informative night.

09/05... At our first regular meeting following the long hot summer we were fortunate to have some wonderful guest speakers. Anthony Licciardello - the SI Director of the Mayor's Community Assistance Unit - spoke to us about the role his office can play in the community - as well as graffiti and zoning. Community Affairs Sergant Vincent Fragapane - accompanied by Police Officer Maria Gilsenan - gave us an update on the New York Police Department's focus on terrorism and how the NYPD is working with the community to identify potential threaats. Lastly we heard from AnnMarie Starita from the New York Public Library who updated us on the many programs available at the New Dorp Branch (as well as other branches) of the NYPL and the reduction in hours at many branches as of September 9. Jessica Ross updated us on the many programs available for teens through the NYPL and encouraged us to spread the news to teens aged 12-18. Check out the library on New Dorp Lane for additional details. And plan now on joining us at our next meeting October 2. 

08/26... The Executive Board met tonight to review old business, identify new business, and discuss possible speakers for upcoming meetings. Plan now on attending the September meeting and catching up on what is happening in your neighborhood.

06/09... Our guest speaker at our June meeting was Darlene Bowman - the Staten Island Coordinator for the Catholic Big Brothers and she was terrific. She presented us with many different options for playing an important role in the life of a child. If you need additional information call us at 979-6011. Get involved. Help a child.

06/01... On Monday night, June 3, there will be a discussion of the Fast Ferry at the Traffic & Transportation Committee hearing at Community Board #2. The meeting is at 7:30 pm at the Board offices at Sea View. If you are interested in finding out what is being discussed about a Fast Ferry for Staten Island, make sure you attend.

04/19... Joe Markowski, president of the NDCCA, and Tom Coffey, Senior Vice President of the NDCCA, were interviewed today by Paul Messina of NY1. The interviews will be shown on Time-Warner Cable's NY1 on Tuesday  April 23 and Saturday April 27. Make sure you catch their discussion of our community on those days as part of Staten Island Week on Cable's NY1. 

04/13... We continue working to provide smoke detectors for seniors who are not protected. If you know of someone in our community who could use this protection, please reach out to us.

04/06... Joe Markowski, president of the NDCCA, attended a session on Staten Island that was held yesterday morning at Baruch College. The session dealt with some of the transportation issues and commercial development issues facing our Island. Speakers included Councilman Mike McMahon, Frank Chaney from the Borough President's office, Rich Nicotra from the Staten Island Hilton, Kathy Dodd from CB# 2 and many, many more. 04/03... At our meeting tonight, our special speaker was NYC Council Minority Leader Councilman James Oddo. Mr.Oddo talked about recycling (he wants assurance that a workable plan will be in place if it is suspended for 18 months) , the Board of Ed (he supports the Mayor's quest for control). Fresh Kills (he is working with the Governor and the NYS DEC to ensure the SI Transfer Station handles only SI trash), graffiti, medical facilities in the community, the proposed rezoning plan, and traffic at the New Dorp Lane/Hylan Blvd intersection. We also discussed Jack Sampson's speech April 9 at the New Dorp Branch Library at 7pm, our next Dining program at Crown Palace at 7pm on April 24. If you missed our meeting you missed a very informative session. (Note: Joe Abbate - Pres. of Citizens of Ocean Breeze, Yasmin Ammirato - Pres. of Midland Beach Civic, and Mark McCluski - NYPL Regional Librarian also attended.) 

03/24... There are a few special events coming up that you should know about.

First, Neighborhood Housing Services is offering an orientation session for a "Financial Fitness Workshop" which focuses on: budget & credit counseling, avoiding credit fraud & entrapment, developing an effective savings plan, and achieving your financial goals. Register for this 5 module, two-hour workshop program on Tuesday, March 26 from 6pm to 8pm at 1205 Castleton Avenue. Call 718-442-1876 for more information.

Second, free classes to learn English for speakers of other languages will be coming soon to the New Dorp Regional Branch Library at 309 New Dorp Lane. Registration is on Wednesday, April 10 from 5:30pm to 6pm. (There will be testing after registration.) The classes are held Monday and Wednesday from 6pm to 8:30pm starting Wednesday, April 17 to Wednesday, June 26. You must register in person. 03/12... Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will be holding a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, March 14, 2002 at 8pm ( doors open at 7:30pm ). The meeting will be at Intermediate School # 72 at 33 Ferndale Avenue between Saxon and Travis Avenues. This Town Hall meeting will be broadcast in its entirety on ACCESS MAYOR, on Crosswalks NYC, Channel 74. For further details log onto www.nyc.gov/crosswalks or tune in to channel 74.

03/09... There are two stories / issues which have arisen lately and which could have a large impact on our community and island. First, there is the issue of re-opening the Fresh Kills landfill / dump. Budget problems notwithstanding, re-opening the dump is NOT a viable answer for our people. Encourage your electeds to speak out regularly and loudly AGAINST reopening Fresh Kills. Enough is enough. Second, discussions have begun about possible sites for a new Fast Ferry link to Manhattan. Midland Beach and New Dorp Beach have been mentioned as possible sites. Read up on this issue. Ask questions. Lets make sure we clearly identify the problem we are trying to solve and come up with the best solution.  

03/07... Councilman Andrew Lanza was our guest speaker at last night's meeting. About three dozen members of the community heard the Councilman speak to us about the issues that he considers vital to Staten Islanders: overdevelopment, the budget deficit, Fresh Kills and the education of our children. The Councilman also responded to questions from your neighbors.

NYPD Community Affairs Officers Sgt. Vincent Fragapane and P.O.Maria Gilsenan addressed community issues related to policing, specifically groups of youths walking through our neighborhoods.

Regional Librarian Mark McCluski was also in attendance and spoke about a new program being rolled out for people seeking to improve their English language skills. Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday nights. Call the branch at 351-2977 for details.

02/28... NDCCA President Joe Markowski met with Councilman Andrew Lanza at City Hall yesterday and he attended the meeting of the South Beach Civic Association tonight. Come to our meeting next Wednesday for an update on both meetings. See you Wednesday. And bring a neighbor !

02/20... Mark your calendars. New Dorp author John Sampson will be speaking on April 9 at the New Dorp Branch Public Library. He will be speaking at 7pm, discussing the research techniques he used in writing his last novel. Plan now on joining us as Jack shares his intriguing perspectives with us.

This evening two dozen of us journeyed to Brioso to celebrate "Dining Through New Dorp - 30".  We were treated to a culinary masterpiece with a very generous sampling of appetizers that left everyone nearly full before the main course arrived. If you missed our "Fat Tuesday" celebration, you missed a wonderful time. Our thanks to Peter Dimaggio and the staff at Brioso for a very tasty evening. And if you missed this event, circle April 24 on your calendars because that is the tentative date for our next dining event.

02/07... Yesterday Kay Pesile spoke to us about the financial aspects of long term care for our senior citizens. Her words were very informative and very thought provoking. Even today I am still mulling over many of her statements. If you missed it you missed an excellent session. 

02/01... Yesterday the Office of Councilman James Oddo confirmed that he will address our Association as our guest speaker at our April 3 General Membership meeting. Mark your calendars. Plan on attending. And bring a neighbor!

1/29... Today we noticed that the 93 Lounge at 93 New Dorp Plaza has apparently closed. The owner was charged with bribery last week and yesterday they took down the sign over the door and emptied the place of its bar and stools. Our thanks to the continuing efforts of the NYPD in ridding our community of this insensitive nuisance.

1/29... Note that the Midland Beach Civic Association will be protesting the reopening of Goldfingers on March 1st. Plan now of participating at their rally that night! Call 979-6011 for additional details.

1/24... Tonight Joe Markowski and Tom Coffey attended Councilman James Oddo's Civic Roundtable at his Grant City office. Mr.Oddo updated us on a variety of issues - many of them directly effecting our community. Make sure you attend our next meeting on February 6 for an update on all these issues. 

1/09... Yesterday Joe Markowski and Tom Coffey met with Councilman James Oddo, the new Minority Leader of the City Council to review various issues related to our community.  Make sure you attend our next meeting for a complete update on these issues. Also, we are in the process of setting up meetings with both Borough President James Molinaro and Councilman Andrew Lanza.  

1/02/02... At this evening's general meeting we had the election of officers for the Association.  The slate of officers as listed in the newsletter were elected.  Also in attendance were Sgt. Vincent Fragapani and Police Officer Maria Gilsenan who updated us on the recent activities of the NYPD in the New Dorp community. Actions have been taken to control events at the Sportsfest while increased attention is being paid to activities on and around the SI Railway. 

12/13... Remember.  As a citizen in our community, you have a responsibility to stay informed about the things that are happening that effect this community.  The best way to keep informed is to be involved with your community organizations, such as this Civic Association. You should also be checking the Sunday Advance each week where they print the upcoming meetings at Community Board # 2 that may be discussing topics directly related to your life in this neighborhood.  A good citizen stays informed.  

12/08... What a wonderful celebration we had tonight! What a wonderful stroll through the raindrops... singing carols... ringing bells... laughing and enjoying the season.  Yes, tonight we celebrated our 8th annual Celebration of Lights Procession down New Dorp Lane.  We met at Mrs.Rosemary's Dance Studio at 5:30 pm then marched and sang and enjoyed drink and a snack at the conclusion.  Thank you Mrs.Rosemary for the use of her studio. Thank you Linda and Don Marotto for coordinating the event. And thank you to our youth volunteers - Amanda Fenn, Ryan Cole, Michael Gottlieb, and Nick Picciotto.

12/03... There was an international design competition to solicit conceptual masterplans for the end use of the 2,200 acre Fresh Kills Landfill. There will be a public exhibition of the finalists proposals at the SI Institute of Arts and Sciences at 75 Stuyvesant Place from December 7 to January 18 . You can get a look at those proposals from the six multi-disciplinary teams at that exhibition. (Note: the exhibition will be closed Dec. 14,15 & 16)

11/26... Greetings. We are back following a long arduous path involving sites being moved and renamed and all kinds of internet nuttiness. That is now all history. We are back and we will be working to update this site and move forward. Thanks for your patience. Now... a few quick reminders: (1.) Take advantage of our "Good Neighbor Award" program. It is an excellent way to say thank you to a neighbor who has helped make this a better community.(2.) Encourage the storeowners in our community to support the hanging of holiday lights along the Lane. They should contact Hollywood Flowers for additional information. (3.) Plan on walking and caroling with us on December 8. We will meet at Mrs.Rosemary's Dance Studio at about 5:30 pm. We will walk, sing and celebrate the holidays. Now that we are back in business, check back with us regularly. Enjoy the day.

10/07... Thank you to all the members who joined us as we marched in the Columbus Day Parade down New Dorp Lane today. And thank you to all the people of New Dorp and Staten Island who lined the parade route. It was a marvelous turnout and a wonderful time was had by all. A special thanks to Don Marotto and John Donovan who drove our vehicles and to Linda Marotto and Marie Markowski who worked with Don and John to decorate them in the colors of our association and the colors of our country. 

10/06... Thank you to everyone who attended our meeting last Wednesday. We had a wonderful turnout and everyone was able to get an update from Susan Gitman, the branch librarian, on all the marvelous programs being offered at the New Dorp Branch of the NYPL including the special things being down to help adults and children deal with the September 11 event. We also heard some tasty hints on healthy cooking and were treated to some "tasty treats" compliments of Donna Kapa! If you missed it, you missed a good thing! 

09/30... As we begin returning to normal, make sure you check here regularly as we resume addressing the issues that are important to our neighborhood. Check this website daily. Send us an email with your concerns, plan on marching with us in the parade next Sunday, make a reservation to dine with us at Lento's on Oct 23, and participate in our history contest. Remember - life is so fragile - so count your blessings - and lets be supportive and good to one another.

9/16... Our hearts ache and our prayers go out to the families of our neighbors in New Dorp, in Staten Island, in New York and throughout our great country as we struggle to make sense of this great loss we have all suffered.

08/23... Enjoy these last days of summer everyone because we are now in the homestretch and summer will soon be a fond memory. Have you noticed the new steelwork going up at Moravian Florist and the top of New Dorp Lane? Ah, life moves on. Enjoy.

08/21... This  morning Tom Coffey, Dan Carbone and Joe Markowski journeyed to City Hall and testified at the Subcommittee hearing on the conversion of residential properties to medical use. Councilman Jim Oddo and Councilman Michael Abel (Queens) spoke out against the continuing loss of our housing to medical units. It became clear that there will be no changes in the immediate future. However it also became clear that this is an issue that we must continue to pursue. And we will. Thank you to Councilman Oddo. And thank you to Tom Coffey and Dan Carbone for giving up their personal time to speak on behalf of our community.

08/21... We understand that an application has been made which will expand the footprint of the Pathmark on Hylan Blvd., the Big Kmart and the movie theatre. They have apparently expressed a desire to expand significantly. More on this as it becomes clearer. 

08/07... The hazy, hot and humid days of summer have arrived. During the past few weeks we have been meeting and working with our Councilman Jim Oddo and other members of the community on a number of issues. We have discussed the Lane Theatre and its future. This morning we discussed Cue Time Billiards and its impact on the community. We are working to get the property at 173 New Dorp Lane properly secured. We are also planning on visiting the City Council on August 21 to testify about the challenges to the community of the surge in conversions of residential properties to medical facilities. So it may be the vacation season and the good ole summertime... but our work continues. We remain committed to the quality of life in our community and remind you once again that it depends on each one of us. 06/17... The EleMent has been closed down. Through the efforts of the NYPD with the continued urging from CB#2 and our Association - this location which did not function as a good neighbor - has been put out of business. We support business in our community who are "good neighbors".

06/05...  Our third New Dorp Memories History Contests is now completed! Stay tuned for our next contest. A new contest begins the week of Jul7 16 !

05/10...  There have been problems with noise in a number of neighborhood locations - such as, the handball courts on Lindbergh at SI Tech, 93 Lounge, Ariana's. We are working with the NYPD, our Councilmen, the Department of Buildings and the owners of those properties to try and correct those situations. Keep checking here and in our newsletter for updates.

04/26...  Congratulations to the winners of our first two New Dorp Memories History ContestsKathy Vorwick wins a NDCCA logo tote bag. She had the correct answer concerning the property at the top of New Dorp Lane when she offered the Rose and Crown Inn. Tony Truscelli wins a NDCCA logo t-shirt with the correct answer for our second contest which was Chicken Delight! Congratulations to both our prize winners! There is still time to participate in our third contest so submit your answer today!

03/28...  Work has begun on the rebuild/ renovation of Moravian Florist on Richmond Road. An old building, originally slated to be torn down, will be saved and incorporated into the new structure.

03/11...  Kay Whitford gave a marvelous presentation at our meeting. Using slides, she introduced us to the Chinese Scholar's Garden of the S.I.Botanical Garden at Snug Harbor, a very unique creation in the United States. . She helped us realize that the Botanical Garden is actually a separate entity at Snug Harbor. She invited everyone to visit the many facets of the Botanical Garden at Snug Harbor. Also speaking to us was P.O.Vincent Truscelli who gave us a presentation on the many crime prevention opportunities available for people who use automobiles.

03/02...  We had a marvelous turnout for our dining program at Villa Portofino. Our thanks to Antoinette and her staff for providing us with a wonderful dinner and a fun time. We were able to celebrate Dr. William Smith's 83rd birthday and welcome author John Sampson to our experience.  A special thanks to Linda Marotto for handling all the arrangements. I encourage everyone to plan on joining our next dining event - Dining Through New Dorp #28 - when we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of our incorporation. Mark your calendars for April 26 ! 

02/16... We need volunteers to help us identify residential properties in our community which have converted to medical use. We are concerned that we may be losing too many of our living spaces. Call 979-6011 and volunteer to help out for an hour.

02/11... We met with the new commanding officer of the 122 Precinct - Capt. Gerald Dieckmann - during the NYPD Town Hall meeting on February 7. We mentioned our concerns about the pool halls, the nightclub, the new lounges, the traffic problems, and kids hanging out at the train station. We are also inviting the new Captain to come address our association. Check in to see when he will address us.

02/11... We have secured a number of smoke detectors which we will be making available to eligible senior citizens in our community. If you know a senior citizen who needs or may not have smoke detectors in their house, please contact us at 979-6011 and let us extend some protection to them.

01/29/01... The 122 Precinct has a new commanding officer - Capt. Gerald Dieckmann. And we have a new Community Affairs officer - P.O.Maria Gilsenan. Our thanks and best wishes go to Capt.Santo Scribani (moving to Police Plaza) and P.O.Peter Castellano (moving to retirement).
